Ruach | Wind, Breath, Spirit

The word ruach, is used throughout the Hebrew scriptures. One word, translated in various places to mean wind, breath, and spirit.

Genesis 1:2 “And the earth was a formless and desolate emptiness, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the SPIRIT (ruach) of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” | Creation story

Genesis 8:1 …and God caused a WIND (ruach) to pass over the earth, and the water subsided.” | Flood story

Job 33:4 “The SPIRIT (ruach) of God has made me, and the BREATH (ruach) of the Almighty gives me life.”

It’s evident that there is an unseen, animating force in our world. There’s something that makes the trees rustle, the clouds move, it’s also what we inhale and exhale, what keeps us alive.

God’s ruach, a rushing wind, a breath of life, his personal presence, mysterious, enchanting, a place where Heaven and Earth meet.
